Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar

Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar...now I don't know the exact translation of this but what I understand by this Punjabi saying is that everyone in this world is unhappy. Every single person in this world has some problem or the other....it could be money, health, love, children, work etc. And that is true universally....it's a common reality which encompasses everyone and doesn't spare anyone.

Even though its prevalent in everyone's life what is different is the way people deal with it. Some deal with it in a positive manner whereas others find it difficult to live with it.

I know lots of people who have lots of things wrong with their lives...we all do. And I see a lot of them cribbing and crying about their lot in life. As though they are the only ones with problems. Life's a bitch....for everyone, and frankly cribbing about it is not gonna make it better....it's not gonna solve anything. All it does is make u feel more overwhelmed and unhappy. So whats the point?

There are others who just go along with a smile on their face and wait for it to pass. They don't make a big hullabaloo about it and just carry on doing what is needed to be done.

Learn to live with the fact that this is just the way it is and smile along the way...if nothing else it'll be a more pleasant journey than if you had spent it cribbing. If being unhappy doesn't lessen the lot on your plate then believe you me trying to be cheerful as you deal with it will not make that same lot bigger.

PS : I get a lot of visitors on this post who are looking for the correct translation of "Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar". If you are one of them, please check Mandeep Singh's commet in the comment section where he explains exactly what it means :)

    bt Guru ji also tell us even if eveyone gets every thing they wish,,, still they will be unhappy bcoz the reasons explained by us (humans)to be unhappy are not the real reasons. these reasons r not true......the unhappiness actually comes from the agyanta (darkness of mind)all we need to do is to lightens the lamp of our mind.
    Pls dont try to use the gurubani according to ur own mind.

      Bali Rove Nahe Bhataar, Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansaar.

      Means a women(bali) weeps when her husband(bhataar) is no more.

      This all is is created by unresolved pain. If you want to connect with god(being) so you need to stop mind(identification) first. All is posible by Love. Yes this too shall pass bcz its only presents. Be here now its a reality.

  9. Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar- O Nanak the whole world is in pain. This Punjabi saying tells us that all humans, regardless of wealth, status, power ect are in some way or another unhappy. This is because the mind always craves for more than it has. Also Guru Ji is telling us that we all suffer from the pain of separation from God.All our pains stem from this. The only way to escape this pain is become one with God and attain liberation from the Samsara cylce (Mukti).Sat Sri Akal (God the eternal one is true).

    1. Yes, the soul is suffering separation therefore the mind is lost and physically we are running around like ants trying to find happiness. This is why the world is suffering with out the true guroo, naam and gurbani.

So i came in lost as ever looking for the meaning of "Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar" - Found Surabhis blog and got redirected to Mandeeps comments - From my point of view Surabhis blog is as much necessary (without going into merits of translations) to accomplish the journey to the true meaning. Every steps counts.. so lets not get too judgemental - as is with life - Depending on what we are looking for - right and wrong - good and bad are all lead us to our objective

  15. I was reading about a story about high rate of suicides in India and this shabad came to mind. When I did the search, your blog came in the search. Like Buddhist teachings if one lets go of the desires (Maya in Sikhism) within, the suffering ends. Guru Nanak Sahib takes it one step further by saying that Lord's Name is the only successful answer to suffering in this World or in other words His name allows control over maya if one stays within His will. BTW, I wish you wouldn't call yourself a lost soul. This life is your chance to meet yor creator. That is the purpose of everyone's life here, at least according to Sikh teachings. Life is beautiful and every moment shall be cherished by remaining in His will. This beautiful shabad starts on page 953 and ends on page 954 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib (www.srigranth.org).

    เจธเจฒੋเจ•ੁ เจฎਃ เฉง ॥ เคธเคฒोเค•ु เคฎः เฅง ॥ Salok mฤ—hlฤ 1. Shalok, First Mehl:

    Meditation upon Gods name, even for only 1 hour a day. Gives u contentment. Without being content we are always wanting something and that wanting never stops and we are never content

    "Nanak dukhiya sab sansar, Sukhiya soi joe naam adhara."

    Trnaslation:
    Whole world is drowned in the sea of sorrow, Happy is s/he who is totally dependent on the name of the lord.

    Meaning:
    No body thinking and trying to attain the world pleasures can be happy. Constant Happiness will come to those who totally depend on the "Name" of the lord. The lord has many names we can even say Infinite names so firstly don't get too bogged down on which name. Secondly an important point here is that Shri Guru Nanak mentioned not the "Lord" but the "Name of the Lord". Why? The reason being not many people in this world know God, the ones who do say that God is beyond speech. Here Shri Guru mentions the "Name of the lord" as the name of the lord has its infinite potency (actually going a bit deeper some people may understand this that there is in reality no difference between the Lord and his Names, if you don't understand this don't worry that is a story for a different day). I'll quote an example here said by a great saint, poison if taken by mistake will still do its job even if ingested by mistake and Amrit (elixir) will still make one immortal if ingested by mistake, such is the potency of the Lord's name that even if taken by mistake will have its affect. Make the lord's name your best friend and you'll see that the name will start talking with you, consoling you, guiding you through the most difficult times, what to say of mere worldy thoughts and things to such a person who is totally dependent on the Lord's name even Great Miracles will bow down at his/her feet.

    Naam Japo(Recite the name of Lord),,Kirat karo(Hardwork) te vand chakko(Sharing with others, helping those with less who are in need),,,,only this particular person is blessed by the lord and gets abundance of luck and ultimately attains Nirvana,,,,

    shabd has been written by baba nanak. He wrote the shabd in the context to explanation that "every one suffers in the world, pain is inescapable".

    however the shabd conveys the message that you could avoid bad consciousnesses if you act logically. baba nanak said everything happens with the order of the creator.

    the amazing thing in the shabd is that it has all the stories from the past and baba nanak has mention the stories and the outcome of those stories.

    and you could understand what happened to those men mentioned in those stories within the shabd, why they suffers, what was the outcome and how did they came out of their grief. and baba nanak put all those example one bye one with the vision of exaplaing the reason and the motives of those men. some suffers when they were innocent like lord ram, king ajae grandfather to lord ram had his punishment, pandhav suffers when their swami krishna was with them, the richest immortal inder cried on what he done to maharishi gautam's sanity, king janmeja (grandson to Arjun) didnt listen to his guru and got into leprosy. he lost his way to life when he killed those brahmins.. such stories were mentioned in this beautiful creation of baba nanak.

    i advice if u havent listen to this shabd u must listen to this just one time. ull get so much of education from it.

    A universal truth

    Agony, misery, pains or sufferings, both physical and emotional, and in all degrees of intensity, are the realities of life. These are the experiences faced by all without exception. Life means jitters of distress, grief and worries going along with moments of peace and pleasures.

    Stresses and strains in our lives for one reason or the other give enough turbulence as smooth ride remains an ambition.

    Unpleasant realities are littered all along the journey of life, and there is no escape from them. The sufferings could be innocently or naively self-inflicted or by others. Elements of nature and karmas have influences as well.

    So, who resides in absolute peace. Unquestionably, nobody.

    Since we can not shake them off, we redefine peace where tensions and sufferings are accepted as part of the game plan of life.

    In this exercise, as one seeks the serenity and tranquility in a field shared by torments and troubles, a practical understanding of that guiding force from whom we often seek answers to our whys, is worth attempting. Here, the line “so sukhiya jis naam adhaar” needs some interpretation in line with the practical approach.

    The guiding force we are talking about is the Eternal Spirit which in the first place advises us to accept the adversity.

    Nanak calls it “hukam razaai”, meaning acceptance (razaai) of the Order (hukam) of the Supreme. The Order prepares us to tackle a calamity with cool mind effectively and decisively. In this acceptance we don’t agitate or get scared.

    Miracles from that Eternal Spirit need not be expected, but what is expected is the courage and strength to tackle suffering with grace and dignity.

    The utmost and unshaken faith in our resolve to accept, face and tackle unfortunate circumstances leads us to a perception of the Supreme power which demands action.

    The nature of this perception encourages us to respond to an unpleasant event. That is where God can be redefined in terms of action. When we seek or gather courage and strength to handle any calamity or suffering that very activity itself is god in live manifestation.

    And once that foundation (adhaar), meaning God in the image of action, is created and secured one can get inspired to be in His (naam) peaceful (sukhiya) abode.

    It is true “Nanak dukhiya sabb sansar”, but it is also true “so sukhiya jis naam adhaar”.
